I Take Pictures In My Mind

Can I remember three small faces under the swishing skirts of an afternoon tent? Can I re-hold, as an awkward twelve-year-old, my red and wrinkled youngest brother? Can I sail the Florida shore at windy, singing twilight, haunted by a dolphin love?

Can I crawl, with all my strength, into my parent’s early morning bed? Can I bow jubilantly before a sea of clamorous playgoers? Can I breathless walk through a Friday afternoon rain on a vacant college campus?

Can I understand what bravery is when I conquer the towering magnolia on our hillside? Can I loudly remind little brother of bumblebee harm? Can I whisper far-away stories to myself under Barney-printed sheets?

Can I hold your brown hand in mine just for six more minutes? Can I make you a coffee while we exchange bright smiles about just breathing this now? Can I love greater than I did when three boys and two girls gathered, in harmony, around one joyful piano?

Can I truly capture a passing sight or a sound? Can I keep forever a memory inside of myself?

Yes. We can. It is a gift that we can do this – a gift from The Giver.

But, we must be very still, usually for quite some time.
