Almost Two Decades

–that’s how long you’ve been breathing

in this good earth. when you awake today, oh

child of morning, the earth wakes with you.

you see those shadow-like does in the early field?

they’re for you.

you feel bursts of warm

winds accompanied by tiny wet kisses?

they’re for you.

you hear the soft callings of the morning dove,

mockingbird, and chickadee?

they’re for you.

you notice the forests gently putting on

their pale green new clothes?

they’re for you.

you hear the living streams and disturbed

puddles around the yard?

they’re for you.

you sense the love, both far and near, so long

and old, reaching out to hold you

tightly in its arms?

this is all for you.
