my attempt at blending the arts I cherish

G-Daddy, what a wonderful name for a wonderful man.

My Mother’s Father

We sat snuggled, he and I,

in that single-cab Toyota. Chilled,

I leaned up from behind and

rested my small cheek on his coated

shoulder.

The heater whined as the winter

wind whistled beyond

the windows. Gram had sent us

to town for groceries, but

we smiled on the return trip,

for the fireplace

awaited our cold bodies and

happy hearts. Settled,

I sat small in his lap

looking over the wrinkled

hands.

Breathing in rhythm with the

strong chest, I lock up

this quiet love,

because gold

of that value is what allows

little girls to grow up in beauty.

To my sleeping beauty who has awoken to the enchanting call of the pen. I love you.
