Silence Is What Gets Us
The Past hangs around too long, whispering of
birthdays, lonely minutes in an office chair,
and underdeveloped morals.
Wooing us right back into
rooms and moments that we had
thought we’d buried deep.
He takes us by the shoulders and shakes
regret into our bones, until we
are left angry in empty
houses. But you and I,
we grip each other’s
hands and nod. For we know
with one whispered “that’s just the way
the world turns,” He and sickly
Nostalgia will leave, staying away for
a time. Their cunning deceits
are squelched by contentment
and an anchored heart.
